Long time no type ...

News from the past few months:

I asked the most amazing woman in the whole world to marry me and she said yes

I took a full-time job as Director of Web Applications for Crispy Gamer

I helped my friend get hired as a contractor by Crispy Gamer

I am continuing to work on Dart Publishing and its web properties.

I evaluated a bunch of blog and CMS software for this site, and haven't found anything I like yet.

That's about it!

Here's some news from my life. First off, I'm still freelancing full time and really enjoying it. I've got a substantial contract going on with a new gaming journalism startup, plus a couple of other projects. As before, here are links to my portfolio and my LinkedIn profile:

My Portfolio

My LinkedIn Profile

Additionally, I was able to "win" National Novel Writing Month by completing more than 50,000 words between 11/1 and 11/30. I'm now at just about 70,000 words and the novel is nearing completion. I'm quite happy with it and will post here when I'm looking for readers. Here's my "winner" badge:

And finally, Greatest Uncommon Denominator Magazine Issue #2 has gone to print. That's the one I'm published in, so I'm a little biased, but even if I weren't in it I'd be recommending that people buy it. The first two issues have been spectacular ... a really good blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and mainstream fiction. Support small press and short fiction, and preorder your copy today!

Significant changes to the site are coming. For now, here are some extremely pertinent links:

My One-Page Portfolio

More as soon as I'm not trying to balance multiple freelance gigs while simultaneously writing 50,000 words of fiction in 30 days! :)

Hi All,

This site is going to undergo a transformation in the upcoming weeks from a professional AND personal site to just a personal site. This means that the resume and web sections will disappear, to be replaced by a link to My One-Page Portfolio. Additionally "hobbies" probably won't be "hobbies" anymore, because I've really gotten into photography and it deserves its own section (complete with updating flickr feed. Woo!)

I've embarked upon a freelance career, too. I may begin blogging a bit about that, here, as much as it pains me to admit that I'm "blogging" in any way (I've always insisted that the stuff I post on cDebris is "news updates" and not "blogging").

We'll see. Either way, expect some changes very shortly.

'Ello there ...

Few new things for you here. We've got an update to the Words section, a new story I like to call "And Now Back to the Action," which I hope you will enjoy.

I've also added a couple more projects to the Web section.

Coming up:

New Photos in hobbies

LOTS of new web stuff

More writing

Various other news!

Just a short update to let people know I'm alive. I'm working on writing some new stuff, and I've got a Flickr Page set up that has nice nice stuff on it. I'm also going to update the web part of the site as soon as things settle down a bit. 2007's been a busy year so far!

Holy mother of [insert the deity of your choice], have I been busy. I decided that it would be a good idea to take on a big contract project at the same time I was working on two of my own web projects, and also heading into the final phase of the latest OkCupid redesign. This, friends and neighbors, can best be summed up as "exhausting but quite profitable" which, obviously, has its pros and cons!

When not busting my ass on web-related stuff, I've also had the absolute busiest spring of my life. All of a sudden my girlfriend and I have entered that zone where we have actually been in this place long enough to know people and thus get invited to do things. Additionally, we then feel compelled to reciprocate (both because it's good manners and because we like these people and like doing things with them), so my life has been a nonstop whirlwind of projects and social events with very little down time. I know ... social life is supposed to count as downtime, but for me it doesn't. I'm one of those types who needs nights in, just hanging out, to recharge. I've barely touched my Xbox 360, and the same three movies from Netflix have been sitting by our tv for like six weeks now. Crazy!

Anyway, the fruits of my labor are finally ripening, and shortly I will be adding both projects (along with a couple other things) to the web design section of the site. In writing-related news, I finished a revamp of my novel (it needed to be changed due to some stuff that happens in the sequel) and even made some progress on Children of the Sun. I've also got a couple of short stories brewing in my head, plus one I need to redraft, plus a couple I need to send out to some magazines. Should be a busy end-of-the-spring for me!

I turn thirty on May 23rd. I don't really feel the "OMG I'm thirty and this is all I've done?" feeling that a lot of people seem to get, though. Perhaps it's because I've done quite a lot already in my life. Perhaps it's because I know what's left to do.

Back with more updates soon!

I'm attending An Event Apart in Boston next week. Should be interesting. I'm hoping to get this very site reviewed during the final conference, so if this news update is suddenly showing up on some kind of giant projection screen: hello fellow attendees.

I'm sure I will get ripped apart for my lazy use of the !important attribute, not to mention my failure to embrace links that don't spawn new browser windows.

Though I will say this: none of the new sites I'm working on spawn new windows. Ever. Some of them do still use !important, though. :)

Lots going on. Lots and lots. Lots and lots and lots. I have no idea who still visits this site -- it's been a long time since the days of Voices and Seph when I was buying advertising on Megatokyo and getting some real traffic -- but hopefully some of the people hanging around are here for reasons beyond accidental web search hits.

If so, perhaps you are looking for things to read, and if that is the case, I recommend heading over to the words page and checking out the new story that I've posted. It's called In the Darkness Below and was written in response to the theme "Twists and Turns" that I established for the writing group I co-administer with Caryn.

If you come here for updates on the life and times of Chris Buecheler, you are a) weird and b) in at least a little bit of luck, because this also is one. As mentioned in the previous post, I am on the precipice of being an actual, published fiction author (I've been paid for nonfiction since at least 1999, but that's a whooole different thing). In addition, I have spent a good deal of this first quarter of 2007 organizing my life and determining which projects to attack, and in what way I'm going to approach them. This is pretty awesome, as I feel much more confident and in control of these things than I did previously.

Documents are being written. Websites are being designed. Code is being coded. Things are happening, and they will be announced with here as they come to fruition. I am surrounded by people who are smart and very, very good at what they do, and these people want to work with me to make these things happen.

I turn thirty in May, and enter a new decade of my life. By thirty five, I will be happily running my own business and I will have at least one novel on bookstore shelves. This is a promise, not to anyone reading this, but to myself. I've waited long enough.

It all starts now.

First off, I added a short story to the words page that I wrote a while ago. It's called the spider and it was inspired by an AIDS-awareness ad that was circulating around a few years ago in which an attractive woman is receiving some, uh, ministrations from a gigantic spider. I don't feel like it's really publishable because it comes directly from someone else's idea (the ad) but I thought it was an interesting experiment, so I figured I'd make it available.

In other news - I've had my first short story accepted for actual print publishing! I'm not ready to make a huge deal out of this yet, since the journal in question, GUD Magazine, is still in the process of publishing their second issue, and my story's not earmarked until the third, and is not guaranteed publication until the contracts are signed, and so forth, but ... it's still awfully cool. I started thinking about professional publication when I was eleven years old, and it's very exciting to be so close. Here's hoping that nothing changes, and By Zombies; Eaten will be my first (hopefully of many) print publication credit.
