The First Chapter of Voices!

I’ve worried about re-posting Voices – a novella I wrote in 2004 – for a variety of reasons. First, it’s far from polished; I wrote the story on a day-by-day basis, posting pages as I went. There was little time for editing, little time for going back and fixing things … and I was living in California at the time, nearly a decade removed from my time in New York City, so my recollection of it was hazy at best. Second, the TV show “Heroes” was created and released and, damn it … it bears a lot of similarities to Voices. I’m not saying they ripped me off (I’m not quite that egotistical), but it’s frustrating to see something come out that so echoes your own work that you feel like people will accuse you of ripping that thing off.
But you know what? It’s a really fun story, I think. It’s got enjoyable characters (including the ridiculously named John Storm, whose name I will never, ever, ever change … I created the character when I was eleven, and I love him). It’s got cool super-powers. It’s got love and sex and murder. It’s got a genuinely creepy serial killer. And it’s got a lot of dialog that I really love. So, yep, here it is.
But just a reminder: Voices — 2004. Heroes — 2006!
I hope you enjoy it.

Just last night I was telling my fiance about this nailbiting thriller I read on the internet years ago that kept me engrossed till the wee hours of morning. And when I related the plot to her, the Heroes parallels suddenly hit me. 3 thoughts:
1. Tim Kring bought out the rights to your story (you rich lucky bastard)! Or…
2. Tim Kring ripped you off! And…
3. I gotta read that story again!
Can’t wait for the rest of it… do post them soon! :)
